Finland's foreign trade with Germany, exports to Germany and imports from Germany in August 2026

The text of the following analysis is produced by a computer program.

Trade with Germany represented in August of 2026 10.0 per cent share of Finland's foreign trade in goods, 8.8 % of Finland's exports and 11.1 % of imports. In August Germany was Finland's third largest foreign trade partner. Weakening from the previous month was 2 places. The month's €1.4 billion trade in goods was 6.6 per cent lower than in August of the previous year. For Finland, the trade balance with Germany was in considerable deficit in August. The amount of the month's deficit was €254 million.

The value of imports from Germany decreased by 5.9 per cent compared to August of the previous year, thus amounting to €809 million in August 2026. Major product categories of imports from Germany were Sitc 781 (motor cars and other motor vehicles principally designed for the transport of persons (other than motor vehicles for the transport of ten or more persons, including the driver), including station-wagons and racing cars), representing 9.0 per cent of imports, Sitc 682 (copper) 5.6 % and Sitc 542 (medicaments (including veterinary medicaments)) 2.9 % of the imports.

The value of exports to Germany declined by 7.5 per cent compared to August of the previous year, thus amounting to €555 million in August 2026. The largest product groups of exports were: Sitc 641 (paper and paperboard), which represented a share of 15.0 per cent of total exports, Sitc 675 (flat-rolled products of alloy steel) 11.8 % and Sitc 682 (copper) 11.6 % of the exports.

Development during January-August 2026

During January-August trade in goods with Germany has grown slower than Finnish trade in goods with the rest of the world. During January-August, the value of trade in goods between the two countries rose to €11.7 billion. Growth compared to the corresponding period of the previous year was 0.2 percent. During January-August the value of imports was €6.7 billion. The export value was €5.0 billion. Compared to the corresponding period January - August in 2025, the value of imports during this period decreased by 2.2 %. The largest product group in terms of imports has been Sitc 781 (motor cars and other motor vehicles principally designed for the transport of persons (other than motor vehicles for the transport of ten or more persons, including the driver), including station-wagons and racing cars), worth €741 million. In export the largest value had Sitc 641 (paper and paperboard), worth being €659 million. The value of exports during this period increased by 3.6 %. From Finland's point of view, the trade balance between the countries in January-August remained in deficit. The trade deficit was €1.7 billion. The trade deficit narrowed compared to the corresponding period in 2025. At that time, the deficit was €2.0 billion.
