USA's foreign trade with South Africa, exports to South Africa and imports from South Africa in February 2025


The text of the following analysis is produced by a computer program.

In February South Africa was USA's 22. most important foreign trade partner. Improvement from the previous month was 8 places. Most of the value of trade between the countries consists of the import to USA. South Africa's share of USA's foreign trade in goods in February 2025 represented a share of 0.8 per cent. Share of USA's that month's exports was 0.3 % and 1.2 % of imports. Amounting trade to worth of $3.8 billion was 172.0 per cent bigger than in February of the previous year. In February the trade balance with South Africa was $2.8 billion in deficit for United States of America.

The value of imports from South Africa was 244.8 per cent higher than in February of the previous year, thus amounting to $3.3 billion. More than half of the value of imports was in Sitc897 (jewellery, goldsmiths' and silversmiths' wares, and other articles of precious or semiprecious materials, n.e.s.) representing a share of 69.6 per cent. The second major category of imports was Sitc681 (silver, platinum and other metals of the platinum group), corresponding to the share of 10.9 per cent of imports.

The value of exports to South Africa were 12.8 percent higher than in February of the previous year, thus amounting to $499 million. The largest product groups of exports were: Sitc333 (petroleum oils and oils obtained from bituminous minerals, crude), which represented a share of 14.4 per cent of total exports, Sitc784 (parts and accessories of the motor vehicles of groups 722, 781, 782 and 783) 7.6 % and Sitc792 (aircraft and associated equipment; spacecraft (including satellites) and spacecraft launch vehicles; parts thereof) 6.5 % of the exports.

Significant increase in trade in goods in early 2025

During January-February, trade in goods with South Africa has grown faster than USA's trade in goods with the rest of the world. During this year trade in goods between countries was significantly higher than in January-February of the previous year. Growth was as high as 115.6 per cent and the value of the trade increased to $6.5 billion. During January-February the value of imports was $5.6 billion. The export value was $878 million. Compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, the value of imports increased by 162.6 % and the value of exports by 0.8 %. The largest product group in terms of imports has been Sitc897 (jewellery, goldsmiths' and silversmiths' wares, and other articles of precious or semiprecious materials, n.e.s.), worth $3.5 billion. In export the largest value had Sitc333 (petroleum oils and oils obtained from bituminous minerals, crude), worth being $72 million. From USA's point of view, the trade balance between the countries in January-February remained in deficit. The trade deficit was $4.7 billion. The trade deficit continued to widen compared to the corresponding period in 2024. At that time, the deficit was $1.3 billion.
