USA's foreign trade with Nigeria, exports to Nigeria and imports from Nigeria in February 2025


The text of the following analysis is produced by a computer program.

In February Nigeria was USA's 52. most important foreign trade partner. Improvement from the previous month was 8 places. Trade in goods between the countries of the month was considerably lower than in in February of the previous year. The value of the trade was $760 million and the drop was 17.8 %. During the month, the balance of trade with Nigeria was $187 million of surplus.

The value of imports from Nigeria decreased strongly, by 32.4 per cent compared to in February of the previous year. The import amounted to $286 million in February 2025. More than half of the value of imports was in Sitc333 (petroleum oils and oils obtained from bituminous minerals, crude) representing a share of 66.3 per cent. Other major categories of imports were Sitc343 (natural gas, whether or not liquefied), 11.7 per cent of imports and Sitc562 (fertilizers (other than those of group 272)) 10.1 %.

The value of exports to Nigeria declined by 5.5 per cent compared to in February of the previous year, thus amounting to $474 million in February 2025. The largest product groups of exports were: Sitc333 (petroleum oils and oils obtained from bituminous minerals, crude), which represented a share of 51.0 per cent of total exports, Sitc781 (motor cars and other motor vehicles principally designed for the transport of persons (other than motor vehicles for the transport of ten or more persons, including the driver), including station-wagons and racing cars) 11.7 % and Sitc041 (wheat (including spelt) and meslin, unmilled) 4.8 % of the exports.

A sharp drop in trade in goods in early 2025

During January-February, trade in goods between the two countries declined sharply (-23.7 %) over the same period last year. The value of the trade was $1.3 billion. During January-February the value of imports was $643 million. The export value was $687 million. Compared to the corresponding period in 2024, the value of both imports and exports decreased significantly. The decline in imports was 32.4 % and in the value of exports 13.3 %. The largest product group in terms of imports has been Sitc333 (petroleum oils and oils obtained from bituminous minerals, crude), worth $461 million. In export the largest value had Sitc333 (petroleum oils and oils obtained from bituminous minerals, crude), worth being $242 million. The domestic trade balance between the two countries was in surplus, as it had remained in deficit in January-February of the previous year. The surplus was worth $44 million.
