Finland's foreign trade with Japan, exports to Japan and imports from Japan in June 2026

The text of the following analysis is produced by a computer program.

In June 2026 Japan represented 1.3 per cent of Finland's foreign trade in goods, 1.2 % of Finland's exports and 1.5 % of imports. In June Japan was Finland's 17. largest foreign trade partner. Amounting trade to worth of €210 million was 20.8 per cent bigger than in June of the previous year. In June the trade balance with Japan was €161.2 thousand in deficit for Finland.

The value of imports from Japan was 41.3 per cent higher than in June of the previous year, thus amounting now to €105 million. Major product categories of imports from Japan were Sitc 781 (motor cars and other motor vehicles principally designed for the transport of persons (other than motor vehicles for the transport of ten or more persons, including the driver), including station-wagons and racing cars), representing 23.6 per cent of imports, Sitc 684 (aluminium) 5.1 % and Sitc 752 (automatic data-processing machines and units thereof; magnetic or optical readers, machines for transcribing data onto data media in coded form and machines for processing such data, n.e.s.) 4.8 % of the imports.

The value of exports to Japan were 5.4 percent higher than in June of the previous year, thus amounting to €105 million. The largest product groups of exports were: Sitc 248 (wood, simply worked, and railway sleepers of wood), which represented a share of 17.2 per cent of total exports, Sitc 523 (salts and peroxysalts, of inorganic acids and metals) 11.5 % and Sitc 542 (medicaments (including veterinary medicaments)) 8.2 % of the exports.

Development during January-June 2026

During January-June trade in goods with Japan has grown slower than Finnish trade in goods with the rest of the world. During January-June, the value of trade in goods between the two countries rose to €1.1 billion. Growth compared to the corresponding period of the previous year was 10.6 percent. During January-June the value of imports was €547 million. The export value was €586 million. Compared to the corresponding period in 2025, the value of imports during this period increased by 31.1 %. The largest product group in terms of imports has been Sitc 781 (motor cars and other motor vehicles principally designed for the transport of persons (other than motor vehicles for the transport of ten or more persons, including the driver), including station-wagons and racing cars), worth €106 million. In export the largest value had Sitc 248 (wood, simply worked, and railway sleepers of wood), worth being €87 million. The value of exports during this period decreased by 3.4 %. The trade balance between Finland and Japan between January and June was in surplus for Finland. The timing surplus was €40 million.
