Finland's foreign trade with Japan, exports to Japan and imports from Japan in August 2026

The text of the following analysis is produced by a computer program.

In August Japan was Finland's 17. largest foreign trade partner. In August 2026 Japan represented 1.4 per cent of Finland's foreign trade in goods, 1.5 % of Finland's exports and 1.4 % of imports. Amounting trade to worth of €195 million was 23.0 per cent bigger than in August of the previous year. In August the trade balance with Japan was €5.4 million in deficit for Finland.

The value of imports from Japan was 34.5 per cent higher than in August of the previous year, thus amounting now to €100 million. Major product categories of imports from Japan were Sitc 781 (motor cars and other motor vehicles principally designed for the transport of persons (other than motor vehicles for the transport of ten or more persons, including the driver), including station-wagons and racing cars), representing 25.8 per cent of imports, Sitc 752 (automatic data-processing machines and units thereof; magnetic or optical readers, machines for transcribing data onto data media in coded form and machines for processing such data, n.e.s.) 8.1 % and Sitc 684 (aluminium) 6.0 % of the imports.

The value of exports to Japan were 12.9 percent higher than in August of the previous year, thus amounting to €95 million. The largest product groups of exports were: Sitc 523 (salts and peroxysalts, of inorganic acids and metals), which represented a share of 14.7 per cent of total exports, Sitc 248 (wood, simply worked, and railway sleepers of wood) 13.6 % and Sitc 284 (nickel ores and concentrates; nickel mattes, nickel oxide sinters and other intermediate products of nickel metallurgy) 10.9 % of the exports.

Development during January-August 2026

During January-August trade in goods with Japan has grown slower than Finnish trade in goods with the rest of the world. During January-August, the value of trade in goods between the two countries rose to €1.5 billion. Growth compared to the corresponding period of the previous year was 11.5 percent. During January-August the value of imports was €731 million. The export value was €784 million. Compared to the corresponding period in 2025, the value of imports during this period increased by 30.3 %. The largest product group in terms of imports has been Sitc 781 (motor cars and other motor vehicles principally designed for the transport of persons (other than motor vehicles for the transport of ten or more persons, including the driver), including station-wagons and racing cars), worth €155 million. In export the largest value had Sitc 248 (wood, simply worked, and railway sleepers of wood), worth being €114 million. The value of exports during this period decreased by 1.7 %. The trade balance between Finland and Japan between January and August was in surplus for Finland. The timing surplus was €53 million.
