USA's foreign trade with Portugal, exports to Portugal and imports from Portugal in February 2025


The text of the following analysis is produced by a computer program.

In February Portugal was USA's 55. most important foreign trade partner. Weakening from the previous month was 2 places. $707 million worth of trade was 2.1 per cent lower than in February of the previous year. In February the trade balance with Portugal was $295 million in deficit for United States of America.

The value of imports from Portugal decreased by 0.2 per cent compared to in February of the previous year, thus amounting to $501 million in February 2025. Major product categories of imports from Portugal were Sitc542 (medicaments (including veterinary medicaments)), representing 23.5 percent of imports, Sitc334 (petroleum oils and oils obtained from bituminous minerals (other than crude); preparations, n.e.s., containing by weight 70% or more of petroleum oils or of oils obtained from bituminous minerals, these oils being the basic constituents of the prepar) 8.1 % and Sitc625 (rubber tyres, interchangeable tyre treads, tyre flaps and inner tubes for wheels of all kinds) 6.4 % of the imports.

The value of exports to Portugal declined by 6.3 per cent compared to in February of the previous year, thus amounting to $206 million in February 2025. The largest product groups of exports were: Sitc792 (aircraft and associated equipment; spacecraft (including satellites) and spacecraft launch vehicles; parts thereof), which represented a share of 19.9 per cent of total exports, Sitc342 (liquefied propane and butane) 11.9 % and Sitc343 (natural gas, whether or not liquefied) 10.5 % of the exports.

Development during January-February 2025

During January-February trade in goods with Portugal has grown slower than USA's trade in goods with the rest of the world. During January-February, the value of trade in goods between the two countries rose to $1.5 billion. Growth compared to the corresponding period of the previous year was 12.7 percent. During January-February the value of imports was $986 million. The export value was $530 million. Compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, the value of imports increased by 8.1 % and the value of exports by 22.4 %. The largest product group in terms of imports has been Sitc542 (medicaments (including veterinary medicaments)), worth $185 million. In export the largest value had Sitc343 (natural gas, whether or not liquefied), worth being $96 million. From USA's point of view, the trade balance between the countries in January-February remained in deficit. The trade deficit was $456 million. The trade deficit narrowed compared to the corresponding period in 2024. At that time, the deficit was $479 million.
